Today it finally happened. I got my self sorted and off to the gym! It really was a lot more complicated than you would expect.
I have two kids, one is in year 3 at school, the other is 2. The older one has to be dropped at school at 8:30 and the younger one usually has a nap around 10:30 – 12:30. So I needed to find a morning class that starts after 8:30 am. I decided to start with yoga type classes, since I’ve done a lot of yoga in the past and it’s low impact. At 243 pounds I am carrying a lot of weight and I want to improve my flexibility and core strength. As I lose weight I’ll try more classes. The gym has a creche where i can drop off my toddler while i work out. I can book them in for 90 minutes, but it doesn’t open until 8:45 am. So I don’t have a lot of options as to when I go to a class!
Twice a week my gym offers a Bodybalance class at 9:30 am. Perfect! It’s a yoga/tai chi blended class, and it’s 45 minutes long. So I went! It costs $16.50 for a class (less if you’re a gym member) and $6.50 for 90 minutes in the creche. So $23 a day. I can definitely make time to go 3 times a week at the moment.
How was my first Bodybalance class? Pretty good. It was hard. I thought it was going to be more relaxing, but it definitely gets your heart rate up! My arms got sore during the very first movement. From experience I’ve found that your arms get conditioned for this kind of thing very quickly. I have no trouble in the down dog pose, but didn’t try sticking my leg up in the air. That seems too hard. I couldn’t balance on one foot very long. My foot bones were hurting. I couldn’t fold forward much when sitting because my stomach gets in the way. And my shoulders are tight. I can’t stretch up very much. These are all things I will be working to improve.
On Friday at 9:30 am is a RPM spin class. I’m going to try it. I’m a little scared, but it’s on a bicycle, I think I can handle it. I am looking forward to burning a lot of calories!
